Bipartisan endorsements from Bellingham leadership and citizens against water fluoridation Bellingham residents have always made clean and safe drinking water a high priority Bellingham City Council Repeatedly Rejects Fluoridation Proposal On September 15, 1997, the Bellingham City Council voted 6 to 1 against fluoridation proposal enacting resolution : Res. No. 42-97 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF BELLINGHAM RECOGNIZING THE IMPROPRIETY OF THE USE OF ITS PUBLIC WATER SYSTEM TO DISPENSE FLUORIDE TREATMENT TO THE GENERAL POPULATION. To date, the resolution remains valid. The City Council members opposing placing fluorosilic acid "fluoride" in the drinking water were: First Ward Council Member Bob Ryan Second Ward Council Member Gene Knutson Third Ward Council Member Arne Hanna Fifth Ward Council Member Pat Rowe Sixth Ward Council Member Bruce Ayers Council Member At Large Louise Bjornson (note: only Bob Hall voted against the Resolution) In 1997, the Whatcom County Democrats and Whatcom County Republicans both opposed water fluoridation. This year the Whatcon County Democrats oppose fluoridation again while the Whatcom County Republicans have not taken a stance. Bellingham City Council official minutes May 18, 1992.  (Arne Hanna served on the Bellingham City Council from 1984 to 1998) In the last few months, over 500 people have signed a pledge in opposition to fluoride being placed into the water supply.  In 1992 and 1997, over 1100 signatures were gathered against  fluoridation and submitted to the Bellingham City Council. Diets lower in sugar, better education about dental care such as brushing and flossing, and supervision from parents will also lead to children having fewer cavities. The city should not put fluoride -- a poison -- into Bellingham residents' drinking water. I work for the City of Bellingham as a water treatment operator. . .  I would be one of the people putting fluoride in your drinking water. Fluorosilicic acid is particularly toxic and highly reactive acid.  I am not trained or licensed as doctor or a pharmacist.  I should not be preparing and distributing doses of drugs that would require a prescription if you were to give them to your children in the form of a tablet.  I am not convinced that water fluoridation is as safe and effective as it is advertised to be.
